A sounds has no fixed meaning without context.
'Elmina': What happens when the white artist steps into a black film. Conventional film in one sense but putting inappropriate actor in the lead role. What happens when you flip the conventions of race and representation. Is everything dependant on perspective?
'Hypno-project': Hypnotised people then showed them images, respond to certain images. Two audiences looking at the same stimulus, triangular. Investigating propaganda and advertising.
'Made in China': How to make idea a reality. Village of artists in China that reproduce famous paintings. Providing cheap aesthetic products. Switched a real painting in a museum with a fake, audience had to spot it. How do we know that we are shown is real? What a piece of art is to different cultures, western (considered bad to make/sell fakes). Crazy notion of replica: copycat cities in China.
Tips for project description: Make them interesting, make them visual, go easy on artspeak and remember you are trying to sell them something.

Artist Biography

Vikki Stevens is an artist born in 1994 in the UK, where she lives, studies and works. When growing up she always had an interest in the arts and is currently furthering her artistic passion at Sheffield Hallam University on the BA Fine Art course.

Vikki experiments with many different techniques and materials to achieve the desired effect. She enjoys working with ink, magazines (collage), acrylic paint and with various materials (for example Nylon) and loves to combine different elements to create abstract images often with vivid colours. The centre of her work is herself and how she experiences the world, usually trying to communicate concerns she has for example concerns about body image and the media’s portrayal of women.

Vikki’s work is constantly developing and changing as she works to communicate her feelings in her work, her most recent series of work were collages using entirely women’s fashion magazines combined with other materials to communicate her feelings about her body image and how she sees these flawless women in the magazines. What stands out about her work is how she pulls many different and sometimes materials considered to be rubbish or everyday items to create work rather than traditional artist materials (e.g. oil paint).

The main artists who influence Vikki’s work are: Barbara Kruger, Gerhard Richter, Yago Hortal, Anthony Gerace and Steve Salo. All of these artists in some way either use collage or paint to communicate about issues or feelings which is the aim of Vikki’s work.
