Week 4

David Clegg

  •

Issues of memory and fracturing time.
  • Time and loss are his subject matter.
  • He works with people who have dementia - how does that person see time (do they get bored?).
  • Stories told by people with memory loss.
  • Amazing how people think about their first memory (common between people) - memory changes over time, it goes through neuron pathways everytime we ‘remember’.
  • First memories are sensory.
  • Our memories are different to others experiencing the same event.
  • Gap in photographs = gap in memory.
  • Avant-garde (12-13 years old) music played same notes over and over - repetition.
  • Got job in a care home after art college - arts and crafts.
  • Alot of his work includes peoples last words.
  • Losing the concept of space - loosing ‘in’.
  • Where stories loop.
  • Quite comedic to listen to - often the content isn’t.
  • How to present/edit it and make it accessible.
  • ‘Room 21’ - “I’ve been here before…” Dementia and the perception of space (how stories become the same due to the space).
  • Looking at the overlooked - stories are being lost.
